Cologne – Choosing the Right Scent for the Occasion
Cologne is a personal choice, but choosing the right scent for the occasion is just as important as choosing the right style of dress. You wouldn’t want to be the only guy at a BBQ wearing a tux anymore than you want to be “that guy” at the wedding wearing an overbearing cologne that gives everyone a headache. Take the time to think about and select a scent that fits with the mood of the occasion.
Cologne , of all the wearable fragrances, has the least concentration of scent. Pure perfume has a much more powerful smell, and thus lingers far longer than cologne. Keep this in mind as you choose your cologne. The scent won’t last as long as perfume, but that does not mean you want to bathe in it to make the smell last longer. Rather, choose a scent that is subtle, but fitting what you have planned.
Everyday occasions such as working at the office, an evening on the town, or a romantic dinner will require slightly different scents. However, these everyday activities generally call for a lighter cologne. Citrus blends such as lime, tangerine or mandarin, for example, make a great soft scent for the office or an evening on the town. Floral blends such as jasmine, lily of the valley, or orchids with hints of vanilla are perfect for a romantic evening with that special person.
Seasons and special events also call for a slightly different scent. For example, oriental colognes with elements of spices, amber, balsams, and/or resins are a perfect choice for winter months. These scents instill visions of warm, exotic locales, providing an aromatic lift from the chill of winter. Lighter, clean scents such as orchids and vanilla are more appropriate for spring and summer months. However, keep in mind that heat activates perfume and evaporates it more quickly, so the smell will not last as long. Special romantic dinners call for light floral scents, especially those that use pheromones.
Finally, keep in mind that sometimes the best scent for the occasion is no scent at all. When working or spending a lot of time in hospitals, nursing homes, or around ill individuals, it is probably best to leave off the cologne. Crowded or confined spaces such as churches or airplanes are also a good time to opt out of wearing any kind of scent. In these tight places, too many colognes and perfumes combine for an unpleasant experience. |
