Kanye West’s Arrogance – In Light of Recent Events
Kanye West is for music what Michael Jordan was for basketball—but that’s just his humble opinion. After his mother died in November 2007, it seemed he perhaps had turned over a new leaf, and that perhaps his arrogance was subsiding. He was very close to his mother and it was quite a shock for him. Whatever modest feelings attacked him during that short-lived episode, they were quickly driven away after a very speedy rebuttal. Kanye West’s arrogance is clear after a single viewing of one of his shows, with dramatized numbers and an unnecessary amount of hokeyness. Still, this is nothing in comparison to some dramatic recent events.
Kanye’s tour “Glow in the Dark” was reviewed by Entertainment Weekly recently and received a B+. With the tightfisted reviews usually given by Entertainment Weekly, any other artist would be happy to receive such a mark, if not simply remaining gracious and lighthearted about the whole thing. These are two concepts Kanye West has never considered, however. His response to the review was bursting with sour grapes, complete with comments like “It’s a good chance you’re a very miserable person. I actually feel sorry for your guys,” and my personal favorite, “…if you see me…BOW!!” If Kanye West’s arrogance isn’t obvious to you based on these comments, it never will be.
Just in case it’s not quite clear for you yet, recall the recent Video Music Awards where, as Taylor Swift was making her award speech for her video for “You Belong With Me,” Kanye West stormed on stage, swiped the mike, and began to proclaim who the real winner for Best Female Video should be: Beyoncé, whose song “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” was apparently more deserving in his eyes. His outburst was utterly uncalled for, and yet fit his personality very appropriately. When is Kanye West’s arrogance going to reach its peak?
Some could argue that this outburst was the peak of Kanye West’s arrogance, as the next night he apologized on the new primetime talk show, The Jay Leno Show. He said “It was rude, period.” Apparently, though, the reason he knew he had said something wrong was not that it is intrinsically disrespectful to snatch a microphone out of the hands of someone giving an award speech, but that once he said it his ears were greeted with boos instead of cheers. At least we know he’s not deaf, right?
